New Vintage Q&A Series

To introduce our exciting new 2021 wines, and the wonderful people behind them here at New Hall Wine Estate, we’ve asked some of the team to say hello, choose one of the new wines, and tell us why…

First up...

1. Name:

Lucy Winward

2. Job title:

Commercial Manager

3. What you do:

I look after the sales, marketing and warehouse teams, and work closely with our contract clients.

4. What’s your favourite spot on the NH estate?

I’m probably biased but it’s the Tasting Shed/Cellar door shop for me; it’s where I meet our clients, host tours and enjoy good conversations about wine, the region, and everything in between with our regulars and walk-ins. I love the swilling, sniffing, slurping and general showcasing with a cracking view of heritage vineyards, there’s always a buzz in there.

5. Be honest, do you talk to the vines?

Of course! Although vines tend to do most of the talking so you need to listen. For example, winter pruning is all about listening to the vines; they’ll be helping us make cutting decisions so we can achieve the most fruitful results, while keeping them all in balance, so they live happy, long lives.

6. Which of the new 2021 releases have you chosen?

I’ve gone for the Barons Lane White 2021.

7. Nice choice. What made you go for this wine?

The Barons Lane White is a zesty, crisp wine with refreshing acidity and a complexity that is gifted to us from the three varietals within the blend. Think juicy conference pear, pineapple cubes and honeydew melon from Huxelrebe, soft lychee notes from Schonburg and a cheeky addition of Pinot blanc which adds a slightly mineral finish. There’s something for everyone in this blend and the spectrum of flavours makes it extremely versatile. It’s right up my street.

8. What food would you pair with it?

We enjoyed a bottle last week with my world famous Mediterranean orzo salad; (briny olives, vegan feta, fresh herbs and spinach, homegrown tomatoes and a lemony dressing in case you ask). A big bowl of that in the middle of the table/picnic blanket with a chilled bottle of refreshing zesty Barons Lane white and you have yourself the perfect summer meal.

9. And what music would you pair with it?

Sunny Afternoon by The Kinks… (obviously)

10. Finally, what is your favourite local place off-site to have a glass of your wine?

Crouch Ridge Vineyard serve a fantastic array of ‘guest’ wines including ours. Sitting on the terrace overlooking the beautifully tended vines with the Crouch Valley as a backdrop is simply stunning.
