Sustainability at New Hall
New Hall is home to some of England’s oldest vines, including a plantation of Pinot Noir planted 50 years ago – so looking after the long term is nothing new here.
Maintaining the health, vitality and longevity of the heritage vines is at the forefront of Estate Manager Andy Hares’ vineyard practices. Having learnt his craft in French organic vineyards, in the last few years he has introduced a policy of low-chemical intervention, mechanical weed control and a diverse range of cover crops. Most recently, he planted almost 5 acres of wildflower meadow, and has joined the RSPB’s Operation Turtle Dove to monitor and support their declining population.
The Cellar Door team also do their part as New Hall is partnered with Recorked, the UK’s leading natural wine cork recycling program. New Hall will collect and donate used and unwanted corks, and Recorked resell as recycled products. For every cork collected, Recorked donate a % of their profit to nominated charities. They also supply free corks to various charities and schools for use in craft projects. Together we strive to serve our natural environment by recycling cork stoppers, most of which will not break down in landfill, and have made the switch from corks to screw tops for all our still wines at New Hall.
2025 Sustainability Update – Powering a Greener Future at New Hall
It’s been a busy few months at New Hall Wine Estate, and we’re proud to share some exciting updates on our journey towards greater sustainability!
☀️ Solar Power Installation
This summer, we took a major step toward energy independence by installing:
-
218 solar panels
-
157 kWh of battery storage
This system is expected to generate 100,457 kWh of clean energy annually — covering approximately 77% of our average electricity usage. That’s not just good for us, it’s great for the planet!
Each year, this will prevent the release of 25 tonnes of CO₂, and over the system’s estimated 25-year lifespan, that’s equivalent to:
-
Driving 764,000 fewer kilometres by car, or
-
Planting over 4,000 trees 🌳
💧 Protecting Our Local Environment
Through a DEFRA-supported scheme, we’ve also improved the infrastructure at the rear of our winery by concreting the area. This vital upgrade will help prevent water run-off and pollution, protecting the nearby watercourse and supporting the health of our local ecosystem.
We're incredibly proud of these steps and remain committed to reducing our environmental footprint while continuing to produce award-winning English wines.
Here’s to a more sustainable future — cheers from all of us at New Hall!
